For more than ten years, I have had the privilege of working with students from kindergarten through eighth grade in public, charter, and classical school settings. Throughout those years, I taught in a wide variety of communities, but one truth remained the same: young people need connection more than ever. They deserve to feel seen, valued, and like they truly belong.
My passion for outdoor education began long before Rooted Connections. As a Venturing Crew Advisor in Illinois prior to moving out to Colorado, I spent two years leading teens ages 14–18 on service projects and wilderness adventures. Together we completed habitat restoration work, explored Florida Sea Base, and paddled through Minnesota's Boundary Waters on a week-long canoe expedition without cell service. Those experiences showed me firsthand how time in nature builds confidence, resilience, leadership, and lasting friendships.
That foundation, combined with my years in the classroom, inspired me to create Rooted Connections. I believe some of life's most meaningful learning happens beyond four walls. When students are given the opportunity to slow down, explore, create, problem-solve, and connect with the natural world, they begin to recognize strengths they never knew they had. They also discover that they are an important part of something much bigger than themselves.
Helping young people uncover those strengths has been the most rewarding part of my journey as an educator. Rooted Connections was created to offer students something different. I wanted to create a place where curiosity is celebrated, creativity is encouraged, and meaningful relationships with themselves, others, and the natural world can grow.
When I'm not working with students, you'll usually find me exploring Colorado's trails with my spouse and our two dogs, tending our small but mighty garden, or creating something with my hands. As a former art teacher, I love sculpting with clay, painting, whittling, and finding inspiration outdoors. I also enjoy cooking nutritious meals from scratch and believe that creativity and curiosity enrich every part of life.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. Whether your family joins us for a single session or many seasons to come, I hope Rooted Connections becomes a place where your child feels challenged, supported, and inspired to discover all that they are capable of. I look forward to welcoming you into our community and growing together!
