Not at all! Rooted Connections is designed for students of all experience levels. Whether your child spends every weekend on the trail or is just beginning to explore the outdoors, they will be welcomed, supported, and encouraged to grow at their own pace. Curiosity and a willingness to participate are the only requirements.
Safety is the foundation of every Rooted Connections session. Each class is thoughtfully planned with age-appropriate activities, site-specific risk assessments, weather monitoring, and clear group expectations. Students are taught how to safely navigate natural environments while building confidence, awareness, and good decision-making skills.
Our goal is not to eliminate all risk, but to help students recognize, understand, and manage appropriate challenges in a supportive environment. We believe this approach helps young people develop resilience, responsibility, and respect for both themselves and the natural world.
Nature doesn't always provide perfect weather, and that's part of the adventure. We often continue programming during light rain or changing conditions when it is safe to do so, as every location includes access to shade or sheltered areas. For severe weather, lightning, poor air quality, or other unsafe conditions, activities may be relocated indoors, modified, postponed, or rescheduled. Families will always be notified as early as possible if plans change.
Students should dress for the weather and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Comfortable layers, closed-toe shoes, and clothing that can get a little dirty are encouraged. We believe there is great value in experiencing nature throughout the seasons, and being dressed appropriately helps students stay comfortable and fully engaged.
Every program location includes access to restroom facilities. We build restroom opportunities into each session and are happy to accommodate students as needed. Depending on the location and activity, students may use the buddy system or take a supervised whole-group restroom break. Student safety and privacy are always prioritized.
Rooted Connections intentionally keeps groups small, 6-12 students, to foster meaningful relationships and individualized support. Our goal is to create a community where every student feels known, included, and encouraged to participate. Group sizes may vary by session, but enrollment will remain limited to preserve the quality of the experience.
We encourage students to unplug and fully engage with the people and environment around them. Phones should remain turned off and stored in a backpack or pocket throughout the session unless needed for an emergency or approved educational activity. If a parent needs to contact their child during the program, they may contact the program leader directly.
Yes! Winter offers unique opportunities for exploration, observation, and learning. We believe experiencing each season helps students build resilience, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Activities are adjusted for colder weather, and sessions are planned with student comfort and safety in mind.
Our regular sessions are scheduled to make the most of available daylight throughout the school year. As the seasons change, students may experience portions of a session during dusk or early evening. These moments provide unique opportunities to observe seasonal changes, practice outdoor awareness, and experience nature in a new way. Activities are always adapted to ensure students remain safe, comfortable, and appropriately supervised.
