We carefully assess each activity by considering both its educational value and potential risks. Rather than removing every challenge, we provide appropriate supervision, clear expectations, and guidance so students can develop confidence, resilience, and sound decision-making skills.
Activities are thoughtfully planned and site-specific risk assessments are completed as part of our preparation process.
Site inspection
Weather forecast review

Clear boundaries are established.
Students learn outdoor expectations before activities begin.

Group size remains intentionally small.
Students are encouraged to communicate concerns and ask questions.
At Rooted Connections, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather. There are only opportunities to learn, adapt, and prepare appropriately. Experiencing the changing seasons is an important part of our program, and we strive to spend time outdoors whenever it is safe and practical to do so.
Every session begins with a thoughtful assessment of current and forecasted weather conditions, site conditions, student needs, and the availability of an indoor location if needed. Decisions are made with student safety, comfort, and the quality of the learning experience in mind.
Hot Weather:
During periods of high temperatures, activities may be modified to include additional shade, hydration breaks, lower-intensity movement, or cooler locations. If conditions become unsafe due to extreme heat, sessions may be relocated, shortened, or rescheduled.
Rain:
Light rain is often a wonderful opportunity for exploration and learning. Students should come prepared for changing weather. If rainfall becomes heavy enough to impact safety, visibility, or the quality of the experience, we may move to an indoor partner location, modify activities, or reschedule the session.
Thunderstorms & Lightning:
The safety of our students is our highest priority. Sessions will not take place outdoors when lightning, severe thunderstorms, or other dangerous weather conditions are present or expected. Activities will be moved indoors, postponed, or canceled as appropriate.
Wind:
Breezy days often provide unique opportunities for observation and exploration. However, activities may be modified or relocated if high winds create hazards from falling branches, reduced visibility, airborne debris, or unsafe conditions.
Snow & Cold Weather:
Colorado winters offer valuable opportunities to experience the outdoors in new ways. Sessions may continue during light snow and cold temperatures when students are properly dressed and conditions remain safe. Activities will be adjusted to include movement, warming breaks, and seasonal exploration. Sessions may be relocated or canceled during extreme cold, icy conditions, or hazardous winter weather.
Air Quality:
Because student health is essential, outdoor activities may be modified, relocated, or canceled during periods of poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke, pollution, or other environmental conditions.
Flexibility & Communication:
When making weather decisions, we consider current conditions, changing weather patterns, site safety, student preparedness, and available indoor spaces before making a decision.
Families will be notified as early as possible if a session needs to be relocated, modified, postponed, or canceled. Our goal is always to provide a safe, meaningful, and enjoyable experience while embracing the opportunities each season has to offer.
The Lead Educator will always have the following with them during every session:
First aid kit
Emergency contact information
Communication procedures with families
Incident documentation
Emergency action plan
